Maria Sharapova is one of the tallest players on the WTA Circuit. Standing at 6' 2" she often towers over others in her bare feet.
As well as being tall Sharapova has large feet and has always struggled to find attractive shoes to fit. She normally wears flat shoes and grew tired of finding the most attractive sandals were the ones with spoke heels.
From an early age she has dabbled in design and always had an input into the design of her tennis dresses.
When one of America's top luxury brands Cole Haan asked her to collaborate on their first sportswear collection she was allowed to have input from the beginning to end, starting with designs and ideas and working closely with the design team.
Since she was young she has wanted to design handbags and shoes and so she grabbed this opportunity to make it her second d career, and something to fall back on when she retires from the tennis circuit.
The result is the Maria Sharapova Collection for Cole Haan and the Spring/Summer 2011 collection has been launched.
She is very excited about it and when she visited one of their shops while she was competing in the Sony Ericsson Miami Open she was wearing a pair of her own peep-toe wedge shoes.
Among the new designs for 2011 is the Air Lalita Sandal, and because she is aware not everyone wants to wear very high heels she has designed them as elegant spike-heel sandals and used the same design for a pair of flat sandals to suit all tastes.
The high-heeled sandal is made of leather throughout, upper and sole and they have 3.75 inch heels and a metallic mesh panel up the front that shimmers as you walk. They are ideal for daytime or evening because the silver mesh looks brilliant under bright lights.
The flat version is the same design but has a ¼ inch heel and is slightly less strappy. The flats have a leather upper and a rubber sole and both types come in black or pumice nubuck (cream), US sizes 5-11.
Both sandals have Nike air cushioning for extra comfort, functional gun metal buckles and adjustable straps as well of a padded sock lining.
The spike-heeled sandals retail around $242.93 but you can pick them up for around $197.50. The flat sandals sell for around $167.50.
100% of customers would recommend the Air Lalita Sandals to a friend and one Los Angeles woman in the 45-49 age range said "I love these sandals and I am ordering another pair in black."
