Birthdate: 7-April-1990
Birthplace: Bucharest, Romania
Height: 5 ft 9 1/2 in (1.77 m)

Turned Pro: 2006

Sorana Cirstea grew up in Romania and started playing tennis at the age of 4-years-old. She is a tour professional because of Steffi Graf, having constantly watched her on the television.

She says she knew she wanted to be a tennis professional like her from an early age and she has been travelling since she was 8 years-old.

Despite her tennis commitments she managed to attend a normal high school in Romania, studying whilst she was touring, and she took her final exams just before the 2009 US Open.

Born on 7th April 1990 in Bucharest, Romania she is fluent in Romanian, English and Spanish and is currently studying French saying she wants something to focus on other than tennis.

She is a former ITF Junior Circuit Top 10 Player and had a Junior ranking of Number 6 in the world on June 26th 2006.

In April 2007 she reached the final of the Budapest Grand Prix, a Tier III event having come through qualifying but she lost to Gisela Dulko in the final, having won the first set.

By reaching that final she became the first Romanian player to reach a tour final since Ruxandra Dragomir in 2000. In the run-up to the final Cirstea beat two Top 40 WTA players.

She won her first WTA title in Tashkent in 2008 beating Sabine Lisicki in the final but she had her break-through on the tournament scene at the 2009 French Open when she reached the 3rd round beating her doubles partner Caroline Wozniacki (then ranked Number 10 in the world) 7-6/7-5. But more was to come, she took the scalp of Jelena Jankovic 3-6/6-0/9-7 to reach her first Grand Slam quarter final. But that was the end of her winning run as she lost to Samantha Stosur in straight sets.

2011 has not begun too well for Cirstea. She failed to qualify at Brisbane and Sydney and was beaten by 10th seed Shahar Peer in the 2nd round of the Australian Open.

Sorana Cirstea is coached by Sven Groeneveld and Darren Cahil on the Adidas Development Programme. They sponsor her clothing and Wilson sponsor her K Blade 98 rackets.

Off court she enjoys playing all ball sports and loves shopping. She relaxes by watching movies, reading thrillers and action novels and doing crosswords.

She lives in Targoviste, Romania with her two parrots.
